Expanded Practices:
A Performance Art Masterclass for Visual Artists

January 5-18, 2026
Dates: January 5–18, 2026
Venues: Vannes, 56000, FRANCE (rehearsal studio, public space...)
Participants: Maximum 10 professionals
Cost: 500€

Overview:
Expanded Practices is an intensive 2-week laboratory designed for visual artists who feel the limits of working solely with static forms—and are ready to explore presence, time, body, voice, and space as extensions of their practice.
Many visual artists today are increasingly drawn toward performance as a way to activate materials, inhabit concepts, and engage audiences in real time. Yet the transition can be challenging—marked by uncertainty, lack of embodied tools, and limited exposure to performative methodologies.
This masterclass directly addresses those challenges, providing a structured yet experimental learning environment where visual artists can develop a performative vocabulary, bridge installation and live action, and shift from object-centred creation to embodied authorship.

About

Common challenges for visual artists entering performance:
  • Fear of visibility and performing vs. remaining behind objects/images
  • Lack of somatic techniques for safe, grounded physical practice
  • Difficulty translating conceptual work into embodied presence
  • Reliance on symbolic forms rather than lived experience and time
  • Uncertainty about dramaturgy, rhythm, scoring, and audience relation
  • Limited knowledge of sound/light/video as live performance tools
  • Lack of confidence in voice, text, and performative intention
  • Practical gaps in documentation, technical needs, and production

You will learn to:
  • Build body confidence and physical presence
  • Convert material logic into live action
  • Develop performance scores from your visual language
  • Work with voice, breath, text, and silence
  • Understand timing, rhythm, duration, and repetition
  • Activate objects, textiles, projection, and sound in real time
  • Design audience relations and consent-based participation
  • Articulate concept → embodiment → composition
  • Produce short, site-responsive performance works
  • Document, communicate, and present your performative practice

This is a practical, professional, mentored pathway into performance for visual artists.

Learning outcomes

What will change for the participant?

By the end of the masterclass, participants will:
  • Gain a new language: somatic, choreographic, and performative
  • Expand artistic identity: from object-maker to embodied author
  • Recontextualize their practice through time, presence, and relation
  • Develop a confident physical and vocal presence
  • Understand how to structure live work without theatre conventions
  • See space, audience, and body as equal materials
  • Increase curatorial and institutional opportunities in hybrid art forms
  • Build a performance dossier for future festivals, residencies, and grants
  • Leave with a finished short performance and its score + documentation

This program increases artistic range and professional mobility—opening opportunities in performance art, experimental theatre, live art festivals, interdisciplinary residencies, site-specific commissions, and museum-based performance presentations.
